Saint George's Day

Wednesday 23rd April

Welcome back!

We really needed a holiday!

You told me about your Easter. Easter holidays were nice, but they belong to the past. This is the reason why you told me about your holidays in the past!

Do you remember how we make questions in the past?

·           Where did you go?                  I went to …
·           When did you go?                  I went on Monday, Friday…
·           Who did you go with?            I went with my family, my neighbours…
·           How did you get there?         I got by car, plane, train…
·           How long did you stay in …?           I stayed for one week, three days …
·           Where did you stay?             I stayed at a campsite, at my grandmother’s house, at a hotel, in my house…
·           What did you do?                    I met my friends. I played bingo, football… I went trekking, sightseeing ,on outings (excursions), walking in the mountains …to processions.
·           When did you come back home?   I came back on Sunday, Monday, last week …
·           Did you have problems with the traffic?  No, we didn’t / Yes, we did.
·         What was the weather like?  It was sunny and hot. But it rained  on Thursday…

Noelia and Alejandro went to the mountains. They got there by car. They  went with their family and neighbours. They went trekking and they played a lot.
Carlota went to her village. The weather was sunny and hot. She swam in the lake! She said the water was OK. In my opinion, it was cold!
Sandra went to her village in Cazorla with her family. She went by car.The weather was good and she had a good time. She saw rabbits, sheep and horses.
Carlos stayed in his house in the village .He went with his family. He got there by car.
Alberto went to the village. He worked collecting wooden logs (for the fire, small pieces of wood from the trees)in the field, helping his relatives. He had a good time and the weather was good.

After that, we talked about Saint George’s Day.

·         When’s Saint George’s Day celebrated?
·         Which countries or cities, apart from England, is he the patron saint of?
·         Who was Saint George before becoming a saint?
·         Which creature, according to the legend, did he kill?

We did a multiple choice quiz and wrote sentences used in the story.
Do you remember the meaning of these words?
Prince – princess – knight – sheep – dragon – flag – shield – sword – village – kill

Homework :

Saint George is celebrated in other countries or cities apart from England (e.g. Catalonia, Spain. Also, Malta, Capadocia, Genoa, Moscow etc.). Find information on the web about different places in the world where they celebrate Saint George and write a short composition about how and why they celebrate the day.

You will find more information and games on this link.

Writing Letters and Describing People

Wednesday 9th April

Hi everybody!

Yes!!! We had the letters from our penfriends from Ukraine and we wrote them back in class.

Are you going to enclose (put into the envelope) a photo of you? It was a good idea to say what you look like (describe) first and then, in our next letter, we could enclose a photo. Anyway, they’re your letters and your penfriends, so you can write whatever you like, it’s up to you (you choose). But remember to be polite and not to ask rude (not nice) questions.

What do you look like? (Describe your appearance)

The order of the adjectives when you describe hair is usually like this
LENGTH              +          STYLE                    +       COLOUR
Long / short         straight/curly/wavy          brown,/fair/dark/black etc.
·         I’ve got long straight blonde hair .
·         She has short curly dark brown hair.
·         He has big blue eyes.
·         She is tall and thin.

Listen to the dialogue and do the exercises
    Appearance

Our next topic is “Shopping”

We started talking about what Katherine, Leo and Jane bought. (past of buy)

Do you remember Katherine?
She is tall and thin. She has long wavy orange hair. She is wearing a yellow dress, brown high-heeled sandals, a necklace and two bracelets.
She is carrying a present. She is going to her friend’s birthday party.

What do you think she bought?

She bought a pair of shoes, a tablet, a bottle of perfume, a black dress …and a laptop…for her friend.
Good memory! You could remember everything!
I’d like to have a friend like Katherine. My friends never give me a laptop as a present on my birthday!!!

 What about Leo?

Well, Leo isn’t very tall and he isn’t fat. He has short straight hair and black eyes.
He’s wearing a uniform that consists of a white shirt, a yellow and purple tie, a red jacket, grey trousers and black shoes. He’s carrying a blue bag with a calculator and some pens in it. And he’s holding (in his hand) a mobile.

What did he buy?
For his new school he bought a new calculator, a new bag, some pens ….
And we finished describing Jane.

Remember

·        Wear. You wear clothes, glasses, make-up and jewellery(a ring,a watch, bracelets, a necklace, earrings…)
·        Carry. You carry objects (an umbrella, a book, a bag…)
·        Hold. You hold something in your hand.

·        What did she buy?
·        She bought a new set of cases.
·        Why did she buy the case?
·        Because she’s going on holiday.

Talking about holiday, have nice Easter holidays and see you on 23rd  April!
Enjoy and don’t forget to prepare to talk about your Easter holidays for two minutes when you come back to English class.
